What Are CVC Words?

CVC words are simple three-letter words that follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, such as cat, bed, pig, hot and sun. They use short vowel sounds (/æ/ as in cat, /ɛ/ as in bed, /ɪ/ as in pig, /ɒ/ as in hot, /ʌ/ as in sun) and are fully decodable once a child knows basic letter sounds.

That is why CVC words are the first step from letter sounds to real reading: children can sound out every letter, blend them together, and succeed on the first try. Our free tool above lets you search 200+ CVC words with pictures, phonetics and example sentences. For structured study, explore our CVC word lists by vowel, word families, and beginner's guide to CVC words.

All 230 CVC Word Guides

Every CVC word has its own page with the picture, the three sounds broken apart, example sentences and spelling tips. Pick the one you are working on.

How to Use This CVC Words Tool

For Teachers (Kindergarten – Grade 1)

Use the search and vowel filter to build a 5-minute warm-up set: pick one vowel (start with Short A), display 6–8 picture cards, have students blend aloud, then play our spelling flash cards or recognition quiz for fluency. Full sequence in our phonics teaching guide.

For Parents at Home

Search your child's favorite picture (e.g. cat, dog, sun), tap the card to hear the sounds, repeat together, then build simple CVC sentences like “The cat sat.” 10 minutes a day with one vowel at a time works best.

CVC Words FAQ

What does CVC stand for?

CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant, e.g. c-a-t. Each word has three sounds and one short vowel in the middle.

What are some examples of CVC words?

Short A: cat, map, jam; Short E: bed, pen, red; Short I: big, fish, sit; Short O: dog, hot, box; Short U: sun, cup, bus. See the full CVC word lists.

When should kids learn CVC words?

Usually ages 4–6, in preschool/kindergarten, after mastering single letter sounds and phonemic awareness.

What is the difference between CVC and CVCC/CCVC words?

CVC has 3 letters/3 sounds (cat). CVCC (fast) and CCVC (frog) add a consonant blend and come later. Master CVC first.

How do I teach CVC word blending?

Say sounds slowly /c/–/a/–/t/, then faster until they merge: “caaat… cat”. Use Elkonin boxes and one vowel family at a time. Details in our phonics guide.

Are CVC worksheets printable here?

Yes. Use the word lists for dictation and grab our free practice ideas on the CVC worksheets page and teaching resources.
